Academic writing helpIn your notes, do not reuse numbers! Each citation gets a new number. Pay attention to indents. Notes use a first line indent, a bibliography uses a hanging indent. A bibliography goes in alphabetical order by author or title if there is no author. Notes are numbered and are listed in the order the sources are used. Times New Roman. Each new piece of information appears on a new line. The title page should not have a page number, but should be included in the page count — in other words, the page numbering starts on page 2. If you are considering not providing a bibliography, we suggest that you consult your instructor first since it is still standard practice to include both notes and a bibliography. Entries in the bibliography and endnotes are single spaced within entries, but double-spaced between entries unless your instructor prefers double-spacing throughout. Footnote form and bibliographic form differ slightly. The headings on the left-hand side of this guide indicate bibliographic and footnote form; they are not part of the entry. The actual note is indented and can occur either as a footnote at the bottom of the page or as an endnote at the end of the paper. This method should always be used for endnotes; it is the preferred method for footnotes. However, superscript numbers are acceptable for footnotes, and many word processing programs can generate footnotes with superscript numbers for you. Author or editor; 3. If there are sample or more authors, list up to ten in the style in a note, list only the endnote, followed by et al. For more than ten authors not shown herelist the first chicago in the bibliography, followed by et al.
